Green & Safe Cookware
Our kitchens are a great place to start your healthy and eco-friendly life. Let’s say goodbye to familiar but toxic, non-stick Teflon, and hello to healthy, safe and eco-friendly kitchens.
What is the different between Eco-Friendly and health-friendly (safe) cookware?
Have you ever noticed these: Eco-friendly, Green, Non-toxic, Energy sufficient, Safe or even Healthy cookware? Though you don’t, we clap for all of you who care for our earth (and us)’s well-being! Well, let’s make it clear:
- Eco-Friendly Cookware refers to what is good for the environments whether it is biodegradable, made from sustainable materials or is made in a way that does not hurt the environment. When it applies to pots and pans or any tools, the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle are to consider. That means the cookware material should be in at least these 3 criteria. Another interested aspect is heat conductivity. The more energy efficient, the better pans.
-
Safe, Non-Toxic or Green Cookware defined as cookware that is free from toxins such as lead, cadmium, aluminum, BPA, PFOA and PTFE. However, when talking about toxic-free pans, the concerning issue mostly points to the two chemicals which technically known as PFOA and PTFE.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) is the substance that adheres non-stick coatings to pans, while PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is the coating itself, better recognized by its brand name, Teflon. PFOA is a carcinogen that is released during the manufacturing process. Good news, it’s set to be phased-out of completely use by 2015. PTFE decomposes at over 660 degrees, producing gases that can kill birds and cause flu-like symptoms in humans.
It is advantageous that these days, there’re many new safer alternatives of traditional pans which are directly designed to reduce these hazards. They use materials such as ceramic and silicone to provide the nonstick surface, while allowing high temperature cooking.
